Gevrey - Clos du Fonteny 1985 L. Jadot

6/95. Acquired from Beaune May-94 for $42 (imported for $58 net).
This 'oldish' Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru from Jadot's own Domaine accompanied the second part of the dinner at our wine-partner's: Tournedos aux Champignons et Poivre Vert, cheese plate, and three colors chocolate mousse.
COLOR: Medium brick-red with slightly brownish hues.
NOSE: Powerful aroma. Earth, mushrooms and meat(?) with some forest fruits still discernable. 'Bourgogne nose' at its best!
TASTE: Totally 'integrated' taste in this fully mature Gevrey 1er Cru. The only 'ingredient' we could pinpoint is the dry-plums sweetness hint one is left with at the end of each sip. Complex and 'meaty' wine yet velvety smooth feel.
LENGTH: Medium-long sweetish aftertaste.
TEXTURE & BALANCE: Silky and mature. Totally resolved tannins, but a lot of body and flesh. I doubt if this wine will farther improve, but probably stay where it is for a couple of years more.
OVERALL: A superb example of a good Gevrey 1er Cru. Similar to Jadot's Cazetiers '85, but maybe a tiny bit beyond its peak.
MARK: 18/20.aaaaaaaaBUY MORE? Yes.
