Cabernet Sauvignon 1982 Silver Oak (U.S.A)

Rubicon 1989 Meerlust (South Africa)

7/95. The Silver Oak was bought in NYC for $60 Apr-95. The Meerlust Rubicon was brought by a friend.
Tonight we opened two unusual wines (for us) for dinner, and drank them side by side (we were three).
Dinner consisted of Oeuf Bourguignon, mushroom soup, veal roast in prunes, cheese and dessert.
The Silver Oak was probably the better wine of the two, but the amount of oak was so extravagant and dominant that it masked almost all other qualities of this mature and substantial wine.
The Rubicon is a Medoc type blend, but surprisingly enough, not very different from the Silver Oak.
Both wines exhibit a lot of oak, but the Rubicon was a bit easier and more pleasant on the palate. Its bouquet was less pronounced than that of the Silver Oak, and it was a bit rougher (it is seven years younger after all).
Both wines had good color, distinct bouquet, not unsimilar tastes. Both were quite interesting but neither, to be honest, we liked very much.
MARK: Both 15/20.aaaaaaaaBUY MORE? Neither.
