Beune - Clos des Mouches Blanc 1992 J. Drouhin
8/95. Acquired from Beaune Jan-95 for $30 (imported for $39 net).
The second time we have this lovely wine from the 1992 vintage.
COLOR: Pale straw color. Not particularly impressive.
NOSE: Excellent forward bouquet. Both 'white' fruits (apples, pears) and
metallic, flinty nose.
TASTE: Crisp, yet rich and savory. Hints of honey on the mid-palate, though a
bit of a rough edge on the finish at first. Probably still too young and not
yet 'rounded'. After some 15 minutes (especially with the shrimp fondue) the
wine became smoother and better. Not a great complex wine, but very tasty and
pleasant.
LENGTH: Medium long aftertaste, with good acidity hanging on in the mouth.
TEXTURE & BALANCE: Very well balanced wine. Not particularly 'fat', neither
very fragrant and delicate. Medium body with still plenty of tannins and
acidity to last many more years.
OVERALL: Very good wine. Not a 'Chevalier Montrachet' (but costs 1/3 as well).
Very tasty and attractive now, will surely become even better in two-three
years.
MARK: 16+/20.aaaaaaaaBUY MORE? Yes.
Beaune - Clos des Mouches Rouge 1988 J. Drouhin
8/95. Acquired from Beaune May-94 for $33 (imported for $43 net).
The only vintage of the 80s I haven't yet tasted this wine from.
COLOR: Very good color for (B). Slightly paling towards the rim, but vibrant
nevertheless.
NOSE: Superb mixture of wood, 'Bourgogne Nose', discernable cherries, earthy
elements. A wonderful, multidimensional aroma. A pleasure to sniff even before
the first drop tasted.
TASTE: Excellent carry-over of the nose to the palate. Fruit all over the
mouth, yet not too dominant to mask other qualities. A WYFIWYG (What You Feel
Is What You Get) wine < g >. Not a very 'deep' and neither one that develops
extra layers of taste. But not everything in life (or wine) should be cunning
and complex. This straight-forward delicacy is soooooo good, we all wished for
more when we licked the last drops from of empty glasses.
LENGTH: A bit shortish though very pleasurable while it lasts.
TEXTURE & BALANCE: Medium body in perfect balance with its elements, the food,
the mood and the people. The strong tannins of the 1988 vintage receded enough
for the fruit and 'wininess' to show off, yet are still there to give solid
backbone to the wood, alcohol, acidity and overall integrity of this beautiful
wine.
OVERALL: Excellent and very well made wine. Still very vibrant and young, with
many years ahead. To me though it was just 'en point' now.
MARK: 17/20.aaaaaaaaBUY MORE? Yes.
