Meursault - Clos des Perrieres 1992 A. Grivault

8/95. Bought in auction Jul-95 for $45 (imported from Chicago for $54 net).
The 'Les Perrieres' is generally considered to be the best 1er Cru vineyard in Meursault. The vineyard is subdivided into four sub-plots, the best of which is the monopole of Clos des Perrieres, solely in the hands of the Domaine Albert Grivault. I had this wine (from older vintages) few times in the past, and always felt it is a stunning wine.
Tonight with chicken legs in cooked in cider, topped with cream & Calvados sauce.
COLOR: Medium-deep straw yellow. Not quite golden yet. The viscous-like appearance that manifests itself in substantial 'legs' on the glass is carried over to the nose, taste and feel.
NOSE: Terrific intense Meursault bouquet coming out of the glass. Very fruity, though not the kind of fruit I can easily name. Neither grapes, nor apples. Maybe something like pears in hot butter . Hazelnuts, minerals buttery flavors, without the honey touch sometimes found in Meursault. All that engulfed in discernable but not overwhelming wood.
TASTE: Fantastic and mouth-filling. Rich, fat and very complex. The attack hints of melon, the middle taste is very strong and dominant. I know it may sound strange, but I was reminded of big fresh succulent yummy oysters. An interesting bitter-sweet touch at the end. An extremely satisfying and interesting multi-layered wine.
LENGTH: Medium long and pleasurable aftertaste that makes you crave for more.
TEXTURE & BALANCE: A hefty wine in every respect. Oak, alcohol (13.5%), and good acidity - all combine to stand up to one of the richest, fattest and full-flavored white wines I remember. Still young, but many years ahead.
OVERALL: Superb! A Grand Cru (B) in everything but title. The only department in which this wine is short of perfect is delicacy and elegance. As there are still some hints of closeness at end-palate, I believe it will gain finesse as it matures to become a truly extraordinary wine.
MARK: 18+/20.aaaaaaaaBUY MORE? Yes.
