Chateau Palmer 1983 Margaux
9/95. Bought in auction Feb-95 for $70 (imported from Chicago for $85 net).
Tonight we decided to try this much-hyped Bordeaux wine with 'leftovers' from
yesterday's dinner (the wonderful duck in shiraz was even more wonderful today).
COLOR: Full dark brownish-red. Quite different from the purple-red color I am
used to in our Cabernet Sauvignon wines.
NOSE: Very assertive! Superb dark-fruit jumping from the glass. Elegant floral
fragrance engulfed by spicy tones. In time, sweetish plum-like bouquet. The
unavoidable 'Bordeaux nose' (pencil tip? cedar? whatchamacallit) is definitely
there but in moderation.
TASTE: Rich, voluptuous, full and fruity on one hand. Closed, (very!) tannic,
unyielding, on the other. A huge wine undoubtedly. Breed and elegance show
throughout. How about tasty, delicious? For my taste, it probably needs
another 5-10 years.
LENGTH: Extremely long complex and pleasant aftertaste.
TEXTURE & BALANCE: A gigantic wine! Fruit, wood, alcohol, acidity, tannins -
all abound. Extraordinary balance that will surely allow this giant to mellow,
open up and mature for many years to come.
OVERALL: At this point a superb++ wine that has everything going for it to
become a truly extraordinary experience given some more time.
MARK: 18+/20.aaaaaaaaBUY MORE? Yes.
