Yesterday and today I tried two of the three Alsatian wines I bought lately.
The third wine, which I haven't tasted yet, is 1992 Riesling "Grasberg" also
by Marcel Deiss. I hope it will be better than the following two.
2/96. Acquired from England for $14 (imported for $22 net).Gewurztraminer 1992 Marcel Deiss
Riesling "Geisberg" 1992 Andre Kientzler
2/96. Acquired from England for $13 (imported for $21 net).
This "Geisberg" is supposed to be a Grand Cru vineyard. The label states so in
no uncertain terms...
The only positive thing I can say about this wine is that it was neither fizzy
nor sweetish. Unfortunately that is _NOT_ enough.
Where the Gewurztraminer was a reasonable wine (of a style I don't
particularly like), this Riesling is simply a _BAD_ wine (of a style I do
like).
I would never have guessed an Alsatian Riesling. Given blind I would probably
say this is a nondescript Israeli white. And believe me my friends, you can't
get much lower than that! Almost devoid of aroma, no taste (at least no good
taste), no structure. Stale, heavy and dull. No resemblance to the
superb Alsace Rieslings I've had in the past.
MARK: 13/20.aaaaaaaaBUY MORE? No.
