Gewurztraminer..... Riesling.....

25-Feb-96

Yesterday and today I tried two of the three Alsatian wines I bought lately. The third wine, which I haven't tasted yet, is 1992 Riesling "Grasberg" also by Marcel Deiss. I hope it will be better than the following two.

Gewurztraminer 1992 Marcel Deiss

2/96. Acquired from England for $14 (imported for $22 net).
This wine has two of the Alsatian characteristics I don't much care for, namely it is a bit fizzy and two bits sweetish. It's a pity more and more Alsace producers are giving up on the clean, fresh, dry style.
Apart from that the wine was reasonable, though nothing more. Where is the familiar Gewurz aroma and taste? It could use a some more acidity too.
MARK: 14/20.aaaaaaaaBUY MORE? No.

Riesling "Geisberg" 1992 Andre Kientzler

2/96. Acquired from England for $13 (imported for $21 net).
This "Geisberg" is supposed to be a Grand Cru vineyard. The label states so in no uncertain terms...
The only positive thing I can say about this wine is that it was neither fizzy nor sweetish. Unfortunately that is _NOT_ enough.
Where the Gewurztraminer was a reasonable wine (of a style I don't particularly like), this Riesling is simply a _BAD_ wine (of a style I do like).
I would never have guessed an Alsatian Riesling. Given blind I would probably say this is a nondescript Israeli white. And believe me my friends, you can't get much lower than that! Almost devoid of aroma, no taste (at least no good taste), no structure. Stale, heavy and dull. No resemblance to the superb Alsace Rieslings I've had in the past.
MARK: 13/20.aaaaaaaaBUY MORE? No.
