Riesling - "Grasberg" 1992 Marcel Deiss

3/96. Acquired from England Feb-96 for $20 (imported for $29 net).
This "Grand Cru" Alsatian is the second wine I taste from Marcel Deiss (the first being a so-so Gewurz).
Tonight this wine accompanied Dorit's home-made Gefillte-Fish.
COLOR: Good straw-yellow, but not entirely crystal clear. The bottle seemed to have some tiny stuff floating around...
NOSE: Excellent though not overwhelming orange fruit. Quite dominant and unmistakable honey tones.
TASTE: Following the honey nose, I was expecting a sweetish wine (which I don't like). Fortunately, on the palate the wine was completely dry though the honey flavor prevailed! (anyone ever heard of non-sweet honey??). The taste was dominated though by a sort of bitterish grapefruit flavor, which I could do without.
LENGTH: Medium-short bitter grapefruit finish.
TEXTURE & BALANCE: A still wine (as opposed to the fizzy same vintage Gewurztraminer), full bodied and mouth-filling. Some astringent tones. Medium-low acidity.
OVERALL: Very good though not a great Alsatian Riesling. Needs another year or two to shed off its bitter finish.
MARK: 16/20.aaaaaaaaBUY MORE? Maybe.
