Syrah 'Bien Nacido' 1990 Qupé
6/96. Bought in London Mar-96 for $23 net.
Tonight, for Friday dinner for two. Of the few American wines I have
tasted, the Qupé "Bien Nacido" Syrah was always a favorite.
COLOR: Beautiful, very dark red color, almost black.
NOSE: Immense! Clean seductive, voluptuous bouquet sprouting out of the
glass. Black forest fruit with complexity added by hints of exotic spices.
No distracting wood. Really intoxicating.
TASTE: As good as the nose. Super tasty and mouth-filling. Layers of ripe
fruit and 'pronounced' winyness. A joy before, during and after every sip.
Beautifully mature and harmonious. Stood up and perfectly accompanied
every dish we had. From the piquant eggplants to the juicy steaks to the
various cheese.
LENGTH: Extremely long and lingering aftertaste. The kind you'd expect
from a top world-class wine!
TEXTURE & BALANCE: Medium-full bodied. Lacy texture. Perfect balance
between all elements. Plenty of fruit, good acidity, full of 'flesh' and
some tannins to hold everything together.
OVERALL: Superb+! No patronizing here. This is no 'jolly little
fellow'. This was a great bottle, period! Must be at its absolute peak
now. Given blind I would surely have guessed a great Hermitage. Much
better than most wines costing 4-5 times.
MARK: 18+/20.aaaaaaaaBUY MORE? Yes.
