Merlot (Israel) 1995 Bustan

8/98. Bought locally on May-98 for $27.
'Bustan' is a new and secretive(!) Israeli boutique winery. Small quantities of both Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot are made, but no information about the winery appear on the label.
COLOR: Dark blood-red, no clearing around the rim and no apparent sediment.
NOSE: Rich, full and warm Merlot aromas. Plenty of 'sticky' fruit is already there. Noticeable wood too. Quite impressive nose.
TASTE: Still very tannic with lots of jammy fruit on the palate. Rich, opulent with good winyness. Almost too rich...
LENGTH: Medium-length sweetish aftertaste.
TEXTURE & BALANCE: Medium-full body and very concentrated. Good heavy fruit, harsh tannins and lack of acidity make this wine somewhat out of balance.
OVERALL: Very good. A serious Merlot for those who love it in its pure varietal form (I don't). Needs a couple of years at least.
MARK: 16/20.aaaaaaaaBUY MORE? No.
