Rioja 'Baron de Chirel' Reserva 1994 Marques de Riscal

3/2000. Bought in Barcelona Sep-99 for $40.
Yet another tasting step into this newly discovered (by me) territory.
COLOR: Extremely dark red. Some sediment already formed near the neck of the bottle.
NOSE: Profound and deep 'Rioja Nose' of dark fruit, noticeable wood and that 'dusty' quality I find in many of the region's wine. The nose here is really complex with spices, tobacco and coffee elements on top of the concentrated fruit.
TASTE: Rich, mouthfilling and masculine. Complex fruit and very concentrated winyness are immediately discernible in this tasty and multi-flavored wine. Tannins still abound though they do not mask the fruit.
LENGTH: Medium-long aftertaste that is still somewhat affected by tannins.
TEXTURE & BALANCE: Medium-bodied wine but extremely expressive. Very well endowed in every respect, though still a bit young and tannic. Excellent balance with plenty of fruit, winyness, complex flavors and nice acidity. Will need more time for the tannins to soften and for all the elements to blend into harmony.
OVERALL: Superb now, but will get even better in a few years time. This wine appears to me as a product of a modern spotless winemaking that is able retain the terroir, texture and the traditional flavor of the region.
MARK: 18.5/20.BUY MORE? Yes.
