Ch. Leoville Poyferre 1990 St. Julian

6/2000. Bought in auction Jul-97 for $110 (current market price ~$160).
I last had this wine almost three years ago (Sep-99). Though still very young at that time, the wine was wonderfully concentrated with pure expression of fruit and winyness.
COLOR: Medium dark ruby. Some clearing around the rim and plenty of sediment on the bottle.
NOSE: Excellent nose of sweetish black forest-fruit engulfed by Bordeaux elements such as tobacco, pencil-tip and cedar. A pleasure to sniff at.
TASTE: Mouthfilling ripe fruit on the palate. Multi-dimensional, concentrated and deep wine of pure flavors. Very good winyness, round tannins and light acidity. Though not a baby anymore, the wine still climbs the maturity curve. Delicious now though will no doubt reach higher spheres with a few more years of cellaring.
LENGTH: Medium-long and tasty finish.
TEXTURE & BALANCE: Full bodied velvet textured wine. Concentrated fruit is well balanced by big [though round] tannins and good acidity.
OVERALL: Superb. Impressive and stylish, this wine shines through its complexity and purity rather than through its 'bigness'.
MARK: 18.5/20.BUY MORE? Yes.
