Charmes Chambertin 1988 J. Roty

8/2002.
My first taste from this controversial but highly regarded (by some) Burgundy producer.
COLOR: Striking purple-red. Very strange color for (B). Noticeable clearing around the rim
NOSE: Powerful and captivating aromas of vibrant red fruit. Fresh cherries in the background with superb 'Bourgogne Nose' as backdrop. Deep and wide-spectrum. Amazing nose!
TASTE: A slight disappointment here. After the fantastic nose, the wine is a bit flat on the palate and somewhat short on winyness. Furthermore, the exaggerated acidity is far too dominant. Not lacking in character and neither unpleasant, this wine was not however up to my expectations.
LENGTH: Medium-long aftertaste that carries forward the pronounced acidity.
TEXTURE & BALANCE: Medium-full bodied wine that cannot be said to be well balanced. Medium tannins, low fruit and high acidity.
OVERALL: Very Fine only. Still, an unusual and quite interesting (B).
MARK: 18/20.aaaaaaaaBUY MORE? Maybe.

Gevrey-Chambertin 'Clos St. Jacques' 1991 A. Rousseau

8/2002.
Yet another Rousseau wine from the excellent though under-rated 1991 vintage.
COLOR: Medium-dark ruby, some clearing towards the rim.
NOSE: Less impressive nose than the Roty CC. Somewhat subdued but finely balanced dark and red fruit with added wood tones. Very nice if not great nose.
TASTE: Mouthfilling with excellent winyness. Deep flavors of black fruit. A bit sombre and very 'correct'. Class and pedigree are very apparent. Excellent on the palate, but not really 'exciting'.
LENGTH: Medium-long and pleasant aftertaste.
TEXTURE & BALANCE: Full bodied finely-textured wine. Elegant, superbly balanced wine where everything is in place.
OVERALL: Superb. High class very well crafted wine with no faults whatsoever. Not much to remember it by though.
MARK: 18.5/20.aaaaaaaaBUY MORE? Yes.

Chateauneuf du Pape 'Cuvee Papet' 1990 Clos du Mont Olivet

8/2002.
My first taste of this highly regarded wine, made from old vines of Grenache with some Syrah and Mourvedre.
COLOR: Very dark red/black color. Hardly any thinning around the rim.
NOSE: Profound nose of spices, black fruit, coffee and then more spices... Rich deep and enticing with an unusual blend of aromas.
TASTE: Really big and impressive wine on the palate. Immensely concentrated, full of flavors and wonderfully tasty. More spicy than fruity, but multi-dimensional. Rich and silky with round tannins and good acidity.
LENGTH: Very long impressive aftertaste.
TEXTURE & BALANCE: Full bodied blockbuster, but in no way a fruit bomb. This well-endowed wine has silky texture, plenty of winyness and superb balance.
OVERALL:Outstanding! An unusual and exciting wine :)
MARK: 19/20.aaaaaaaaBUY MORE? Yes.
